The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians started construction of the Angel
of the Winds Casino near Arlington Washington in April 2004 and opened
its doors in the fall of the same year.
Angel of the Winds Casino represents a dream come true for the
Stillaguamish Tribe. For generations, the Stillaguamish have pursued
the goal of self-sufficiency for the Tribe and its members while
striving to preserve Tribal values and culture. Angel of the Winds
Casino marks the key step in achieving that goal. Angel of the Winds
also will help our entire community by creating hundreds of good jobs,
infusing tens of millions of dollars into the local economy and
providing a high quality entertainment option.
The Stillaguamish Indians have lived in the Stillaguamish River Valley
of Western Washington for hundreds of generations. Until about 150
years ago, the Stillaguamish lived a way of life that was in balance
with the natural environment and supported a unique and vital culture
and spiritual values. The coming of Euro-American explorers and
settlers and the spread of unfamiliar diseases destroyed that way of
life.
Like most Indian tribes, the Stillaguamish have struggled since then
to regain their economic and cultural self-sufficiency and to overcome
a host of social problems brought about by poverty and historical
tragedy.
Angel of the Winds Casino is named after Che-Che-Yel, a highly revered
elder of the Tribe in earlier generations.
The Stillaguamish have made great strides in recent years in caring
for their people and by embarking on economic development, such as the
Tribe's native species nursery. Angel of the Winds Casino represents
the Tribe's best chance for sustained economic success and the capital
formation necessary to provide badly needed services for its members
and to diversify into other businesses. In fact, in the long history
of the federal government's relationship with Indian tribes, tribal
gaming has been the only program to substantially help tribes.
The benefits of Angel of the Winds Casino will spread far beyond the
Stillaguamish Tribe. The Casino will employ over 250 people and have a
payroll of over $1 million per month. Whenever feasible, Angel of the
Winds will do business with local businesses. With the multiplier
effect used by economists, Angel of the Winds Casino will pump an
estimated $40 million into the local economy while providing hundreds
of good jobs.
The Stillaguamish Tribe takes pride in the first class facility and
entertainment option that Angel of the Winds Casino will provide to
our area. We are dedicated to making Che-Che-Yel proud of her
descendants and the Tribal business that carries her name.
